Do you really need all that „stuff” for every single implant?

How many and what kinds of components do we need to use for a SINGLE IMPLANT? You’ll be amazed… but these „little things” are what make it truly premium! A few months ago, someone commented on Facebook that you can get implants from China for as little as 50 EUR… aren’t we ashamed to be putting in an implant for that price?! But this is my favorite (under one of our posts about complete tooth loss):

In cases of complete edentulism, I’ll use the life cycle of a single premium implant as an example to show just how many components must be used from the time of implantation until the prosthesis is delivered… and then you can decide for yourself: is the price the patient has to pay too high or too low?! IMPLANTS

The list prices* for the two premium titanium and zirconium implants listed above are 158,000 and 189,000 Ft.

Here are the list prices* (rounded): We use one for each implant. We „only” use the rest during the procedure, but we do not leave it in the patient’s mouth permanently: FOR THE HEALING OF THE GUM TISSUE AROUND THE IMPLANT CLOSING SCREW (closes the implant opening during subgingival healing). Price: 22,000 Ft   STRUCTURE INTERMEDIATE STRUCTURES (ensure that the gum tissue grows around the implant without complications; we use them in every case, BUT MOST CLINICS DO NOT). We need ~20 different types (!) for each of our implant systems…and we must always keep multiple units of each type in stock—at least 10 per type (meaning a minimum of 200 units in stock for a single implant system). Price: 25,000–78,000 HUF per unit   HEALING SCREW GUM SHAPERS (cover the abutment during gum healing; we must stock at least 5 different types for each implant and intermediate abutment) Price: 13,500 HUF (35,000 HUF for special-purpose abutments)   FOR FINGERPRINTING AND ORAL SCANNING IMPRESSION TRAY and SCAN MARKER (for conventional or “digital” impressions. Sometimes both are used for a single implant). Price: 10,000 – 40,000 Ft   DENTAL INSTRUMENTS 1 LAB ANALOG (the counterpart of the intraoral implant in a plastic or plaster model used in dental laboratory work). Price: 9,000 – 17,000 Ft   DENTAL INSTRUMENTS 2 DENTAL IMPLANT LOCATOR (for dental scanning) Price: 10,000–20,000 Ft   FOR TEMPORARY DENTAL RESTORATIONS UNIVERSAl OR TITAN BASE (this is used to attach the temporary crown/bridge to the implant) Price: 18,000 – 37,000 Ft   FOR PERMANENT DENTAL RESTORATIONS TITÁN BASE (once this is placed, the final crown or bridge is attached to the implant). Price: 37,000 Ft   FOR PHOTOGRAMMETRIC SCANNING PIC TRANSFER (for photogrammetric scanning; can be used up to 50 times. In Hungary, EXCLUSIVELY AT THE HALÁSZ CLINIC!). 107,000 Ft…that’s right, no typo!   We implant the Nobel Parallel for 449,000 Ft and the Active Ti-Ultrat for 582,000 Ft. At our clinic—unlike many other places—this price includes all the components listed above, as well as any additional parts required for the procedure. Here at the Halász Clinic, in addition to the implant itself, we always incorporate components worth 133,000–152,000 Ft into the patient’s mouth for each implant. (Many clinics cut corners on these „add-ons”… but it is precisely these components that make premium implants as durable and resilient as possible.) In addition, the value of components that—with a bit of luck(!)—can be reused multiple times is 220,000–240,000 HUF per implant: some can be used once, while others can be used several dozen times. And it's not enough to have just one of these! Since we cannot know in advance exactly what situation we will encounter during surgery, we must maintain a wide range of sizes not only for the implants as a whole but also for each individual implant (!). This depends on the diameter of the implant being inserted, as well as which components are best suited to the implant placed in the patient’s specific location and their individual characteristics. Thus, for a single implant to be placed, we must have components worth 1 million HUF per implant on our shelves in the full range of sizes, of which we will use components worth 280,000–390,000 HUF for that one implant. And what is the value per implant: • the largest domestic inventory (~150–200 million)? If I place 12 implants of the same diameter in a patient’s mouth, and each implant requires exactly the same type of multi-unit abutment from among the 10 available types: I’ll still need to have all 10 types on the shelf—one for each of the 12 implants—for a total of 120 multi-unit abutments (78,000 Ft each)…which ultimately amounts to 10+ million worth of parts. BUT for an implant with a different diameter, there must also be components worth 10+ million…and which diameter will I use? This is influenced not only by bone width but also by bone quality…and if there are 3 implant diameters, I’ll need 10+—10+ million HUF’s worth of parts for each one, so that’s already 30+ million worth of „stuff.” But the situation is even more complicated than that: we use 6 different Nobel Biocare implant systems (and each of them comes in 3 different diameters). The components of two of these systems are compatible with each other. This means we have to stock a full range of parts for five different systems. That’s why we have thousands of valuable „bits and pieces.” There are quite a few components, implants, and instruments that haven’t been used in years because they’re intended for specific situations. But we have to keep them. So that you can always count on us to provide the most suitable solution, DURABILITY, and SAFETY in every situation. • The 10-Year Halász Clinic Guarantee And the manufacturer’s Nobel Biocare Lifetime Guarantee—is that really a guarantee of safety?!—We cover the cost of lost implants out of our profits. • Investment in implantology: buildings, infrastructure, machinery; instruments, equipment? – at least 10–20 million for the basic level, several hundred million for the advanced level. …which are constantly being replaced and wear out. • knowledge and learning? If an implantologist attends just one 2–3 million course twice a year (because that’s roughly how much they cost), that amounts to ~500,000 Ft per month, which is financed through implantology. • to the experienced, highly qualified team of three who perform the implantations (a doctor, one sterile assistant, and one non-sterile assistant) and their time? Cleaning and sterilizing instruments after surgery takes about as much work as the implant procedure itself… what about the support staff—the cleaning staff, receptionists, etc.? WELL, I’m filling the days between the two holidays with a newsletter this substantial, and we wish you Happy New Year! *Compared to the list price, certain clinics and doctors may be eligible for discounts.
